All climbs on rock – backwards in time
Note: As usual, after the pink pointing only the red pointing left. So, after one day’s rest, he climbed Matrix red point too. He also tried the hardest route in Hungary: the „Bányarém” (Quarry’s Monster) but there was a wet hole in the crux. No matter! Maybe next time!
18. 09. 2005. Matrix X- R. P. (4th try) Kis Geri HUN
Note: After the very succesful trip to Adlitzgraben, the two friends went together to Kis Geri. I witnessed the perfect partnership of these good climbers. First Balint climbed the Matrix, and his friend, Laci recorded his cimbing with his digital video-camera. Then Laci climbed the same route, and Balint filmed him. Both of them were yelling, encouraging each-other. Balint also tried a not so hard route: the Angel Heart. But his fingers were so thick, that he couldn’n put them into the small horizontal cracks of the route. He could climb it only on the third try, and pink point.

Note: A very good Hungarian climber, Lászlő Dede invited Bálint to Adlitzgraben, Austria for a weekend climb. It was a great pleasure for him climbing with his friends and no parents at all!

Note: After pink pointing the two routes, the next step was to redpoint them. On Sunday he red pointed the Zed at the first try, then the Sorvadás at third try. We both felt that he did a great job before the famous Aggtelek Cup. All that was left was some training on plastic because of the ending of the route in Aggtelek.

14. 08. 2005. Sorvadás X+ R. P. (4th try) Kis Geri HUN
Note: After the training camp he had to take a two days rest, because there was no skin left on his fingers! On the third day – far from beeing 100 procent fit – he couldn’t wait any longer, and went to train at his friend’s. The Objektum, as it was called by the owner is not really for recovering… Not at all! It’s the complete disaster for the climber’s skin! On the day after, he went to the Vertigo Bouldering Club and had a hard time there. The next day we went to the „Kis Geri” but he had to put bandage on his fingers. Thank God, he could climb the „Sorvadás” (Atrophy) at first try. After a quite long rest he decided not to try the R.P. of the Atrophy, but instead of that, the easier looking Zed. He succeeded at the third try – also pink point. Quite a good result with no skin on his fingers at all!

Note: This was the sixth time he came to Slovenia for a training camp. In the Climbing Guide Book of Misja Pec (issued in 2005.) there are 168 routes. Balint tried 136 of them and succeeded in 131. During these three weeks he climbed 21 routes – most of them were 8 grade routes!

Note: After coming back from the 8th Trophy of Ravenna, Italy, the next day we went to the Kis Geri – the most famous climbing place in Hungary. We didn’t want to do the same mistake that we did last year: going for a training camp without doing any hard routes before. First he climbed some routes again, then he succeeded on the two brutally hard crimper-routes: Fenevad (The Beast) and Sarlatán (Charlatan). A very good sign before the training camp!

Note: On Whit Sunday we wanted to go to Esztergom, for a competition, but he was not allowed to participate – so we decided to climb on rocks. The weather was just fine, and we met two friends of ours (climbers, of course) – so we spent a really nice day together. First we went to the Rock Gate. Balint climbed some hard problems there but we didn’t know exactly the names of them. (We had no guide book with us).

Then we went to the Lion Rocks for some bouldering, but he grew a bit since we’ve been there in ’97 – so the boulders grew much smaller! Finally we went to the Quarry of the Goat Hill for some roped climbing. He climbed the Corn-flakes with the original start (he couldn’t do it when he was 9-10 years old). He climbed also the „Peremszerelem” (Love with crimpers) at the first try and a pretty long traverse all along the quarry’s walls.

Note: Being the overall winner of the Men’s open of the „Vertigo Boulder Cup” he was taken to Fontainebleau, the most famous bouldering place in the world. The costs of the transportation and accomodation were paid by the organisers of the competition. He spent there a week with two other lucky competitors and two experienced climbers – their guides. He climbed a lot of very easy problems (between 4c and 6c Bloc) and a bunch of harder ones – not too many, because there was no time to finish the really hard ones. Here are some of the problems with names, but he climbed about 10-15 other (easy) problems every day.

Note: The fifth training camp at Mišja peč, in Slovenia. He’s surely going to be a real expert here; he tried 120 routes till now, and succeded 110 of them. The ”Poontang” – a route with a quite exotic name was his 100th route that he climbed here. (Sorry! Not really exotic – erotic at least!)

In fact, he tried it once, before we left for the training camp – but it was four weeks before! Note: We went to the quarry of the Silver Hill (Ezüsthegy) at the first time in February 1999. Despite the snow all around, there was quite warm since the rocks facing south. Törpe made a successful try on the problem ”Silver Birch” (Ezüst nyír). I didn’t let him finish it because its end is at about 7-8 metres high. Next time we had a rope with us, so he could climb the boulder safely.

Note: His first training camp ever was at Peilstein in Austria in August 1998. Leading first time on rock, it was a real landmark of his climbing career.(He climbed on lead till that time, but only on plastic in climbing gyms where the express slings were already placed in the routes.) The second challenge was the extreme height of the routes, reaching 40-50 metres – a real adventure for a seven-year old kid.

Note: We found the quarry of the Goat Hill accidentally on the 8th of March 1997. After bouldering on the Lion Rocks (Oroszlánsziklák) we went uphill on the way home and on the „Other side of the mountain” we saw the quarry with climbers in there. There was a chocolate bar on the top of one of the routes. Whose chocolate is that?- we asked the climbers. The one who can climb for it – was the answer. Törpe put his shoes and harness and his chalk bag on, ready to climb. Since we had no rope with us, we asked the climbers’ permission to use their rope, and Törpe began to climb. He reached the chocolate of course, because it was his favourite one: Sport- bar (Sport szelet). As we learned later, the route’s name was Kofa (Market-woman). Since that time he has climbed many-many times there – but some exact dates are missing. The limestone there is quite loose; that’s why the top roping is the only way of climbing here. And that’s why we changed later and went to the French Quarry for climbing on lead.

Note: Finally the very beginning: the years 1993-1995 when he climbed rock on family hikes. Both of us were soloing – I climbed after him, to be able to catch him in case he fell. That was the so-called „belaying” of those times. Then he climbed harder and harder routes – so I had to buy a rope and a harness, because the double soloing became too dangerous for us.
